Radeon 9600 dual display issues

I have a Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB card in a A7N8X MB. I have downloaded the ATI drivers, gone through the fglrxconfig so many times I have it memorized. My problem is this: I can startx (successfully) in Single and Clone modes, but can't utilize the Big Display or Dual Head modes, which is my ultimate goal, as I have two monitors connected. When I try to use the Big Display mode x craps out on me and says "AddScreen/ScreeInit failed for device 0" (I do not have access to the log file as I am not currently at that computer). On the other hand, when I try the Dual Head mode x seems to run just fine; only problem being both screens go black. The HDD LED on my computer flickers for a while, then stops as it would if I were running x successfully.

I have spent countless hours researching this, and no one seems to have an answer to my dilemma. Can anyone help me?
