Anybody know how to get a Lexmark Z22 printer connected with USB working in KDE w/ the 2.6.1 kernel. I found a thread from a few years ago that said how to get it working.

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=24813&highlight=lexmark

I followed it, but when I try to print anything it says "page printed successfully" but my printer does nothing. If you need me to post any information I'd be happy to, let me know. Thanks in advance.

Are you running hotplug?

If not your USB printer probably isn't being detected by the kernel

what does

Code:
 ls -ltr /dev/usb/
say?

I followed the printing guide from the gentoo docs for my usb printer and all went smoothly. That's on a 2.6.1 kernel and KDE 8)

Code:

ls -ltr /dev/usb
total 0
crw-rw----    1 root     root     180,   0 Dec 31  1969 lp0

I'm under the assumption that the response would mean that it see's something on lp0 for a printer... correct me if I'm wrong though.

I'll double check the gentoo docs....

I unmerged cups and foomatic and started the guide over again.
Going through the gentoo printing setup guide:

Nothing prints when I do the following:
Code:

# touch test.txt
# echo "Hello World" > test.txt
# cat test.txt > /dev/usb/lp0

Also trying to use the control-L addition, nothing happens:

Code:

# touch test.txt
# echo "Hello World^L" > test.txt
# cat test.txt > /dev/usb/lp0

It doesn't give me an error or anything, it just doesn't do anything.

After attaching the printer, it gets logged here:
Code:

tail /var/log/messages
   .... various non-relevant messages

Did you have a look on linuxprinting.org?

Do they have anything to say about that particular printer?

I looked on LinuxPrinting.org, and they say to use the ghostscript driver for the Z32 because they're the same hardware; but it doesn't appear to work very well to begin with.. I'm still curious because I found a post from a year or so ago about someone getting their z22 working nicely without that ghostscript driver. I'll keep playing with it, if anyone has any ideas let me know, thanks

Strange that the printer won't even accept text. Is the printer definitely working?
Have you got another machine you can try it on?
Had a problem recently where my printer just needed switched off and back on again. USB connection must have gone stale or something.

Other than that I'm all out of ideas..

Ya the printer works fine when I boot to Windows XP.. I've tried cycling power a few times... each time I can see it get logged as dissappearing and reappering in the log file... I'll keep playing with it and post any results.

Well, I don't know what has changed, but my printer readily accepted the test page today. My computer has been restarted a few times, switching between my Windows XP boot and Linux, and it seems to be working. I have absolutely no idea what has changed.
