Okay i have a wireless M$ optimouse with scroll wheel (ice to be exact). Ive read every post on here about installing a mouse but i just cant get this one working. Ive configured the kernel with all the different options i could think of and still nothing. The light wont even turn on, on the reciever. I've tried cat /dev/{all mouse type devices including usb} and they all show up blank, lsmod is blank, im not sure what else to do. Im using the 2.6.1 kernel, can anyone help.

I've had similar problems, I'm sure you already enabled all the USB stuff into the kernel, there's one other thing though.

I'm not sure which one it is, but I think busmouse or ps/2 support also needs to be enabled.

ps/2 support is in "input device support"

busmouse is in "character devices -> mice"

if I remember correctly, your problem is the busmouse not being enabled.

nope i have bus mouse enabled, i switched everything to modules but i notice that when i boot up it says it cant find the modules the:
mousedev
hid
input
usbcore

and when i lsmod nothing shows up so is there maybe something thats not linked right and the kernel can't find the modules?

Also another thing that might help im using a radeon 9600 so i use the fglrxconfig instead of the normal config for X. maybe its using the old xconfig file instead of the one created by fglrx (xf86config-4)

I suppose I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure busmouse is for mouses that connect to a serial port, not ps/2 or usb

I assume you're connecting it to the usb port? Have you tried using an adapter to connect it to the ps/2 port?

well the problem is, is that its failing to load the modules during the start up is says :
failed to load modules
usbcore
failed to load module
hid
and so on so for some reason its not finding the modules that are needed

kernel 2.6 has different module names for usb, so double check what they are called in the kernel config help.
