What can i do to regenerate this device? |

/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 is a sym link to your device, in the case of mine its:
Code: |
root@gillian cdroms # ls -al cdrom0
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 33 Dec 31 1969 cdrom0 -> ../ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd
|
Check to make sure you have the appropriate device on your system and then recreating the link would probably do it.
However it begs the question why did it disappear, is the device still listed in your bios? perhaps somethings gone funny, maybe even try a quick reboot into a knoppix or livecd to see that the device is actually functioning and hasnt just given up the ghost.

I've got the same problem, /dev/cdroms/ is just gone. yet the cdroms are being detected in /proc/ide/.
Another thing i've just noticed is that /dev/ide/host0/ only has one bus.. no bus1 (for the secondary ide channel?).
Code: | # ls -Al /dev/ide/host0/
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Jan 1 1970 bus0 |

Is there anything you changed on your system that might coincide with the devices disapearing (i.e. new kernel, et cetera)? |

I'm on kernel 2.6.1, but i think ever since i've been using the 2.6 kernel i've had this problem. It is possible that it is a missing option in the kernel config or something. |

My /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 file just up and disappeared as well. I will look inside ide directory and try to make a symlink. |

This happened to zeano after a kernel update. Is this the same with everyone else having this problem? If so, I would suggest making sure your new kernels are configured properly (wild guess: you did enable devfs support in the kernel, right?). |

Yep. devfs support is enabled. It's marked as important in the PPC installation guide, so you can't miss it. |

I'm having a similar problem.. I can't seem to find my cdrom drive...
I did a grp install so I'm sure everything is loaded for the cdrom.. i'm on an old x86 had the corresponding gentoo installation.. kernel 2.4.20-gentoo-r6
in etc/fstab it shows "/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro"
want more info? heh _________________ Gentoomania! Support the Open Source!
