Are you talking about gdm? If yes and if you're using gnome:
| Code: | | gnome-menu ---> applications --> desktop preferences ---> advanced ---> login photo |
or just launch this:

The settings are in kcontrol.
System Administration --> Login Manager,
click Administrator Mode and everything is changeable from there, from the background to script to fonts to user picture, etc

| you know, that'd work great, only I think I just killed my xserver, and I'm having a lot of fun getting it back up. I'm still curious as to where it's kept though, I wanted to get that image off of my box so I could put it on another one. do you happen to know the location of the file? |

I'm not quite sure what you are talking about but if you mean the background it is simply a wallpaper, you can choose anyone you want.
It defaults to:
| Code: | | /usr/kde/3.1/share/wallpapers |
But as I said, you can choose any image you want.
If you mean the user picture/icon, they default to:
| Code: | | /usr/kde/3.1/share/apps/kdm/pics/users |
but again, you can choose any icon you want.

| um, I'm not sure how else I can put this. my computer is set so that the login prompt you see when you first boot up is a gui. there is a background behind the login prompt. where on my harddrive is that file kept? |

I don't have a /usr/kde/3.1/share/wallpapers/ on my system. I did a and got the output | Code: | | kde: /etc/kde /usr/include/kde |
so I searched through those, but I didn't find what I was looking for. |
