I just want to know ....

Is 2.6 going to "stay" as development-sources forever?
If not, when is it "moved" to gentoo-sources?

Sorry if this is asked anywhere else in the forum, did not find it ;)

Give 2.6 a while to get settled :-) The earliest it will possibly happen is later this month with the next release of gentoo. I would guess a few months though. There's really no hurry, whether it is considered stable or not by portage doesn't really effect its operation

Ok.. so at this moment it's not considered stable by portage
Is it considered stable in any other distros of Linux yet?

The switch to 2.6 is a major change in the portage structure, so it'll take a while. I misled you when I said not stable. It's probably just a logistic matter. No distro has 2.6 enabled default that I know of.

Fedora Core uses the 2.6 kernel and NPTL.

2.6 is a big change from 2.4. It will take a while to integrate it into portage and get the rest of gentoo compatible with the new kernel.

Fedora Core uses 2.4 patched with ntpl support, not 2.6.

In Linux, Odd numbered kernels (2.1.x, 2.3.x, 2.5.x, etc.) are test kernels ... and when they are deemed stable, they are moved to the next highest even kernel ... so 2.5.xx was renamed 2.6.0 at some point in developement ... There is also a 2.6.0-test for a period of time after moving the 2.5.xx kernel to 2.6.0 ... then a final 2.6.0 release.

Then a maintainer works on the 2.6.x kernel and a 2.7.x kernel will be started as the unstable kernel ... when 2.7.x becomes stable, they'll name it 2.8.0test...
