Audigy Platinum, Gamer & MP3+.
I was comparing these three cards, but would like some info if anyone has it. According to Creative's website, these are the differences:
- Sample Sets: 4 & 8MB for Platinum (4MB gamer/mp3+)
- S/PDIF In on Audigy drive for Platinum
- Platinum only: S/PDIF Out, Optical In, Optical Out, Aux In 2, Headphone Out, Line In 2, Mic In 2, InfraRed Receiver, Bundled InfraRed Remote Control.
My main interests are with S/PDIF, Optical and InfraRed Receiver. Does anyone use them? Do these options work with linux (kernel, alsa, oss, etc.)? _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Right guys, as promised ill let you know how i got on.
Soundblaster live 5.1 OEM came in the post, horray!
Checked through my system, seems i never had alsa on it in the first place, which saved a load of time in the install.
downloaded both files
make
make install
( for both packages)
made a file in /etc/modules.d/ called emu10k1 and in that i put post-install emu10k1
ran update-modules
put emu10k1 in the /etc/modules.autoload
modified emu10k1.conf to
CARD_IS_5_1=yes
ENABLE_TONE_CONTROL=yes
now i get sound out of the front and rear speakers sets great, but i get no sound out the center speaker, and the sub has really really weak bass, ( almost definately as a result of the data from the front and rear channels )not the sub channel as it should be
Surround and prologic arnt active
In my kernel i think i have just sound card suppport active, not sure about oss .
anyone got any ideas? im sure there is something i missed, ive read through your helpful instructions but cant seem to work it out...
Many thanks for all your help guys.
ps :
kanuslupus : i read that there is no hardware difference between the live 5.1 range of cards, ( apart from the extra panel that comes with the platinum )
All the varying features are due to the software that is bundeled with them
pps : could someone please post their emu10k1.conf file so i can double check mine is ok? also do you have "post-install emu10k1" or "post-install emu10k1 /usr/local/etc/emu-script" in the file in /etc/modules.d/ , and what did you call it?
Thanks all _________________ And no, my name has nothing to do with the linux distribution i use |

Okay, well this is my /usr/local/etc/emu10k1.conf file:
Code: | ##
## This file is used to configure emu10k1's emu-script
##
CARD_IS_5_1=yes
USE_DIGITAL_OUTPUT=no
ENABLE_TONE_CONTROL=yes
# Note, it's safe to say yes to the next option even if you're not going
# to use it. When this option is enabled, the driver can autodetects AC3
# data and behaves normally with normal audio.
# (Saying yes causes some of the soundcard's resourses to be used up)
AC3PASSTHROUGH=no
# Change this to yes to enable the Livedrive midi port and IR remote
# control.
ENABLE_LIVEDRIVE_IR=no
# Most Lives have their analog front signals inverted. If you have
# problems with your setup (low bass), try changing this to 'yes'. (This
# option has no effect with digital setups)
INVERT_REAR=no
#Multichannel playback (for 4 - 6 channel setups)
MULTICHANNEL=yes
# On 5.1 cards in multichannel mode, should the multichannel data be fed
# to the sub as well? You probably don't want this if you have a
# speaker set like the DTT2200 which already feeds all channels to the
# sub in hardware.
ROUTE_ALL_TO_SUB=no
# By default, the front analog channels have a +12dB boost applied to
# them by the AC'97 mixer. If you encounter clipping, or find that the
# volume of the front speakers is too high in a multichannel setup, try
# changing this to 'no'.
ANALOG_FRONT_BOOST=yes
# Surround
##################
# Some wavs, or mp3 are surround sound encoded the next two
# options can be used to decode these in hardware.
# (select on or the other, not both)
# passive matrix surround decoder
SURROUND=no
# Active matrix surround decoder
PROLOGIC=no
# Extra Inputs
#################
## This connector is mounted on the card itself
ENABLE_CD_Spdif=yes # Volume control is 'Digital1' in aumix/gmix/kmix
# The next four inputs are found on Livedrives, some of these may also
# be inputs on the older add-on daughter cards.
ENABLE_OPTICAL_SPDIF=no # Volume control is 'Digital2'
ENABLE_LINE2_MIC2=no # Volume control is 'Line2'
ENABLE_RCA_SPDIF=no # Volume control is 'Digital3'
ENABLE_RCA_AUX=no # Volume control is 'line3'
|
I made a file /etc/modules.d/emu10k1 (doesn't really matter what you call it as long as it's in /etc/modules.d, update-modules simply parses through all of the files in this directory) which contains the following:
Code: | alias sound emu10k1
post-install emu10k1 /usr/local/etc/emu-script
|
Also, I didn't use the emu-tools package at all. This package is simply for using special features of the emu10k1 drivers that come with the kernel code. The emu10k1 package is an updated version of the kernel drivers which contains both the drivers and the tools. The installation sequence should go like this:
-Unpack the emu10k1 package.
-Edit the config file in the directory that you unpacked into. You should change the KERNEL_SOURCE line to point to the appropriate directory. The default for a gentoo system is /usr/src/linux . If you compiled OSS support into the kernel as a module, you will also want to change the SEQUENCER_SUPPORT line to y.
-make
-make (the previous make will tell you if you need to do this again)
-make install
-make tools
-make install-tools
After that, set up the emu10k1.conf file as I have it, copy the emu-script file to /usr/local/etc, make the /etc/modules.d/emu10k1 file, run update-modules, add emu10k1 to the /etc/modules.autoload file, then you should be all set. Either restart your computer, or do modprobe emu10k1, to load up the sound drivers. Then just find something to test it out with.
Hope that helps _________________ Kawada

btw... my gentoo box doesnt have a sound card (yet :) so I cant test... we have a emu10k1-audigy ebuild ... will it work with every Live! cards ? it looks so, but I just want to be sure :) ... it would be much better if we didnt have to download and install the drivers ourselves... |

After reading this thread, I really liked the info that TuxFriend supplied about ridding the system of Alsa; however, being the hacker that I am and finding the suggested method a bit unorthodox , I wrote a script to automate the task of finding all apps that depend on alsa and remerging the packages of those apps. It is as follows below.
begin remove-alsa.sh
Code: |
#!/bin/sh
echo "-- Beginning to rid your Gentoo installation of all alsa deps..."
ALSADEP=/tmp/alsadeps
NUALSADEP=/tmp/nonuniqalsadeps
if [ `whoami` != "root" ]; then
echo "!! You must run this script as root!"
exit 1
fi
echo "?? Would you like me to attempt the removal of all common alsa apps and related libs?"
while (( 1 )); do
echo ">> [y]es or [n]o: default <no>"
read
case $REPLY in
"y" | "yes" )
for ebuild in alsa-lib alsa-oss xmms-aalsa alsa-driver\
alsa-tools alsa-utils alsa-xmms alsamixergui\
alsaplayer wmmixer-alsa; do
echo "-- unmerging $ebuild..."
emerge -C $ebuild
done
echo "-- Finished unmerging alsa and related libs."
break

continue

done
if [ `grep -c "\-alsa" /etc/make.conf` -ne 2 ]; then
echo "!! Looks like you have not yet added -alsa to your USE environment variable."
echo "!! It's kind of pointless to use this script without it, so please add"
echo "!! -alsa to your /etc/make.conf USE line. Exe. USE='-alsa'."
exit 1

end remove-alsa.sh
Just copy and paste this file into a new file named remove-alsa.sh and chmod 700 remove-alsa.sh. Then just ./remove-alsa.sh and follow the directions.

Hello world,
I have a normal sblive (not 5.1) with Creative 4-Point surround speakers plugged in & a 'home-made' optical SPDIF-Out circuit to rec sound on my MD walkman. I use ALSA currently because when recording on the MD via optical it separates the tracks automatically, something that didn't happen w/ kernel 2.4.17's stock emu10k1 I tried. So my questions are :
1. Is emu10k1-v0.19a newer than the stock kernel 2.4.19's ?
2. Has anyone tried digital recording w/ emu10k1 ? My circuit works exactly like the optical output on LiveDrive (but it costed me much less).
I'm thinking of rebuilding my box with gcc-3.2 & would to try that driver instead of alsa...

Well, after hours of trying i still havent had much luck.
Ive followed all the instructions to the letter, and i still only get sound out of the front and rear, with the center and sub channel giving nothing.
I really cant work out what the problem is, as far as i can tell ive got everything the same as you guys have.
Is there anyway i could contact one of you guys who have this working for a real-time chat? irc or icq possibly? Perhaps then we could get to the bottom of it!.
I really appreciate all the help thats been given in this thread, you guys rule so much.
As soon as i get it working ill write a proper how-to for the tips and tricks section!
My icq is 50572181, and im normally on #gentoo on irc.openprojects.net as the name Gentio
Many thanks guys
ps : do i need to have OSS in the kernel as a module or just as * _________________ And no, my name has nothing to do with the linux distribution i use |

Update :
Me and TuxFriend sat down for a while and tried to get to the bottom of the problem but with no luck.
I upgraded to the latest kernel, recompiled everything and checked the config files, but i still only get 4 channels.
I tested it using an AC3 divx, and i get the front and rear channels perfect, with the sounds coming out the correct speakers, but i get no dialouge from the front speaker and no sound from the rear.
audio_oss_out : 6 channels output is outputted from xine so i know that xine is working correctly.
What desktop manager are you guys using? i m using gnome 2, ive tried it with and without esd running.
this really is baffling / annoying the hell out of me, im getting close to wiping the system and starting again, but i really dont want to have to do that!
Put your heads together guys! im gonna have a play with some config files.
PS i tested the 5.1 with a separate 2 speaker set and got the same, so its not my speaker system thats causing the problem.
Many thanks, especially to tuxfriend for chatting on irc
Also many thanks for the script, but i get -- Finished unmerging alsa and related libs.
!! Looks like you have not yet added -alsa to your USE environment variable.
!! It's kind of pointless to use this script without it, so please add
!! -alsa to your /etc/make.conf USE line. Exe. USE='-alsa'.
even tho i have definately got -alsa in my use line. _________________ And no, my name has nothing to do with the linux distribution i use

Not sure Genito.
Maybe triple check the connections. The connections on the SBLive 5.1 are a little weird (i.e. the outputs for the three channels are not right next to each other), and I know that I have messed this up in the past. Aside from that I all I can do right now is offer encouragement--it is possible to get this thing working.
Oh yeah, and I'm running fluxbox with no esound, arts, alsa or anything like that. _________________ Kawada

However, I had a difficulty along the way: when I had ENABLE_TONE_CONTROL=yes set, sound was muted. Xmms was happily and silently playing along, and quake said something to the effect of "sound subsystem is muted" even though aumix shows everything at 67. When I change that setting to yes, everything plays nice.
So what is tone control? Do I need it? Is there a way to get it back?
fyi, I'm running an audigy with analog speakers |
I believe tone control gives you the treble and bass sliders in mixer applications. _________________ Kawada

heh, you were too quick for me to delete my post It actually sorted itself out with a reboot, a modprobe after installing the emu10k1-audigy didn't work as expected. Now it works |

Well its got me, i just cant work it out.
Im gonna wait for Gentoo 1.4.
Or ill proabably use the 1.4 beta a build a new system with that, its a shame but i dont wanna just emerge update everything.
I started from a stage 3 tarball, maybe its that
or maybe its the irq its using on the board
or maybe its my onboard sound (which is disabled in bios ) messing it up
Who knows, hopefully a fresh install will help!
Thanks to everyone, ill keep you posted, and hopefully finally be able to write a how to!

Seems they are making progress with the Audigy on sourceforege.

Check out the CVS for the latest and the greatest.

Crap, I STILL cant get sound of my Audigy. I followed Kawada's instructions above, but I still get an error when I try to load a sound app.
Now, I have commented out ALL lines relating to sound in modules.conf, is there anything that needs to be in there, since it added the lines I put into /etc/modules.d/emu10k1 file I created?
I just recompiled my kernel with sound support and OSS support BUILT IN, does OSS have to be a module? Do I have to uncomment the lines pertaining to OSS in /etc/modules.conf? If so, which ones?
Thanks, guys! |

I checked out old Audigy code from sourceforge CVS was how I got it to work with a 4.1 digital speaker setup. Reverted back to an SBLive! 5.1, for now at least. opensound.com promises support on the Audigy sometime later this year or early next year. Reckon it'll stay on the shelf until then. _________________ Don't panic, Jesus sent the mechanic. |

Sorry, but my instructions were for the SB Live! 5.1. Really can't say anything about how well they would work with an Audigy. And unfortunately I can't give any extra advice on how to go about getting an Audigy running (don't own one, never used one). Anybody else got some suggestions? _________________ Kawada

How about Turtle Beach Santa Cruz? It's Linux-support may not be as good as with Creatives sound-cards (altrough the drivers are improving all the time), but as a sound-card it's clearly better than anything Creative has to offer. |

I've considered a TB (cause I don't like Creative), but if the drivers aren't very good, then the card doesn't do much for me. I've held on to my not-working-very-well AWE64. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I was looking at this few months ago, and I was almost ready to go for the Philips (don't remember the ref, but I think they do only one).
It looks very promising. I finally didn't get it for budget reason... |

The TB card sounds great under Linux. It leaves the Creative cards for dead. Just load up the cs46** oss module and you're done. I was gonna' recommend this card earlier in this thread but it seemed eveyone was obsessing over Creative so I stayed out but to anyone considering a sound card I would say that this is as good as it gets in that price range. |

How many channels do you have working with the TB? Unless I'm thinking of a different card (Phillips or someone), I thought I'd read that only 2 channels (front L/R) worked. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |
