How I finally got my computer to power off

It seems like numerous people has the same problem as I had, the computer wouldn't turn off after shutdown -h, even after compliling APM or ACPI into the kernel.

However, someone somewhere suggested applying the ACPI kernel patches available at:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/acpi

Patch up the kernel (see kernel-howto), make sure you use the new ACPI-support (disable old ACPI and/or APM).

And voíla it instantly worked (well, after the usual make dep && yada, yada...)
