Hi everyone. I just ran chkdupexe on my system, and I've been a little surprised to realise that many system binaries are dupped. One even more bizzarer thing is that they often have a different size than the other dupe... Well, see for yourself...
Code:
root@venus jchoisy # chkdupexe
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root       282228 Aug  6 23:50 /bin/pgawk-3.1.3
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root       223156 Jan 27 20:55 /usr/bin/pgawk-3.1.3
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root        16892 Jan 29 07:48 /usr/bin/texteroids
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root        22968 Jan 28 04:12 /usr/bin/X11/texteroids
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root        60936 Jan 29 07:48 /usr/bin/pswrap
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root        71044 Jan 28 04:12 /usr/bin/X11/pswrap
-r-xr-xr-x    1 root     root        11712 Jan 28 01:57 /bin/kill
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root        17028 Aug  6 23:56 /usr/bin/kill
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root         7780 Jan 29 07:48 /usr/bin/dpsexec
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root         8936 Jan 28 04:12 /usr/bin/X11/dpsexec
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root        44300 Aug  6 23:48 /bin/shred
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root        34316 Jan 27 20:49 /usr/bin/shred
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root         6244 Jan 28 01:48 /bin/groups
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root         1674 Aug  6 23:56 /usr/bin/groups
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root        23908 Jan 29 07:48 /usr/bin/makepsres
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root        28260 Jan 28 04:12 /usr/bin/X11/makepsres
root@venus jchoisy #

I'm really no kind of expert about this, but are they all normal dupes? I mean, should I really have 2 'group' binaries? With different size in /bin than in /usr/bin ? I'm not extremely worried since I'm really careful about what I install on my box, but still... I'm surprised....

EDIT: accorded o the dates, the bins dated aug 6 come from the stage tarball I used... Too bad they actually die there... Shouldnt they disappear during upgrades??

EDIT2: oh well... gues I was being paranoid. It looks like the dupes either are explained by the old files comming from the stage tarball, or the others are from the DGS ebuild. Since both DGS and Xfree provide those files, the size difference must come from the fact that the Xfree ebuild filters the -Os cflag... Nice.... I can sleeep now :) Sorry for an obviously useless post.
