Ok, so my Gentoo install is trying EVERY ftp and http mirror site on earth and when allowed to connect(which is most of the time) I get the above error(or onw saying it can't find the directory or combinations there of). But, and here's my question, is there a way to shorten the ftp time-out value?
At the moment its set to 3 minutes and the script tries each ftp site 5 times before giving up and trying the next one. For those arithmetically challanged, that means 15 minutes for every site that doesn't respond the the ftp request.
It has now been looking for tar-1.13.25.tar.gz for the last 2 hours. Does anyone know if it will evey give up?
By the way, the command I typed was:
emerge --fetchonly system.
Cheers,
John |

You can change the amount of tries in the /etc/make.conf file almost to the bottom. Looks like this.
Code: | # RSYNC_RETRIES sets the number of times portage will attempt to retrieve
# a current portage tree before it exits with an error. This allows
# for a more successful retrieval without user intervention most times.
#RSYNC_RETRIES="3" |
You may want to make sure your is uncommented and set it to one try.
I have no clue on the time though. Good question though. I wouldn't want mine to wait that long. If the server is that busy, move on to another.

Is it trying to download from mirrors that you specified in /etc/make.conf ?
If you don't have any mirrors listed, look at this thread for a solution :
