3rd thread, 3rd problem, not off to a good start with Gentoo. :(. Anyway I want to get fluxbox up and running so I type emerge --pretend fluxbox it shows stuff and then I type emerge fluxbox. After that it'll perform MD5 checks as usual, then just freeze when trying to unzip the first file.. Any idea how I can prevent the freezing and is there a way to delete the temporary files downloaded from the emerge fluxbox command?

you can delete the /usr/portage/distfiles/fluxboxxxxx.tar.gz files and see if that solves the problem.

I re-emerge fluxbox not too long ago (thursday) and it worked fine...

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Desktop Environments. Window Managers and Desktop Environments are post install issues.

Another file that can give you trouble is /tmp/sandboxpids.tmp. Get rid of it if it exists at any time other than during an emerge.

Sorry for posting in the wrong forumss, I didn't know which forums to choose because this is technically installing gentoo still... but anyway I'm going to try this out, I'll tell you how it works. Once I get this done it's smooth sailing from here, because I'm a XF86 Pro and with X started things get easier. :)

Hmm deleted a bunch of stuff, still froze though, same thing... froze when installing X11. I'll try again later tonight. What would happen if I deleted the entire portage tree? Would Gentoo stop working or could I redownload it?

No problem. To explain why, read the description of the Installing Gentoo forum.

If you've finished the install guide, look somewhere else. But if you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place.
Once you have finished all of the steps in the Install Guide, then Installing Gentoo is complete (as far as the Installing Gentoo forum is concerned).

Back to your problem. What does 'emerge -V' output?

I was looking through the posts on the board and freezing during compiling KDE or Gnome 2 didn't seem like it was that uncommon. Many people had hardware problems to blame, but others didn't know, and just kept trying until it worked. I'm going with choice number 2...

emerge -v doesn't give any errors. Says I have one file to config in /etc though and asks me to use a command to get help. I can't read the help text because it scrolls too fast and I can only see the bottom half of it.

Anyway I'm going to try to emerge fluxbox a dependency at a time. I'm going to attempt Xfree first... btw any idea how long it takes for xfree to emerge?

Depends on your processor, but don't watch it and wait ;)

emerge -v fluxbox didn't give any errors... keeps freezing... I really don't know what's wrong. Anyone have any suggestions because I'm stumped... I think I may have to go back to SuSe if this doesn't start working soon. People on other posts had problems emerging KDE, and I'm not sure what their solution was.

Are you running
Code:
emerge -v
or
Code:
emerge -V
There is a big difference. -V will output the version of portage you are running. Thats what I want to see.
