i have an older laptop with cirrus logic 7543 chip, not supported by xfree 4.x
in poking around, i see there was an ebuild for 3.3.6 once upon a time, but haven't found it yet ... i'm wondering what would be the best route to take ...
1/ install with the latest gentoo build and make sure the USE variable has -XFree, then build XF3.3.6 and find a way to update portage on my machine so it doesn't try to 'upgrade' me to XF4.x
2/ install latest build with USE -XFree and then find this 3.3.6 ebuild. how i prevent later emerges from hosing 3.3.6?
3/ install an earlier gentoo build with xf3.3.6 and then update everything except X. do fluxbox/xfce/icewm require xf4.2?
4/is it at all possible to run XF4.2 on this unsupported cirrus chip by using a generic SVGA server?
i've installed a few distros (caldera, mandrake, corel, storm, progeny, vector, basic) but am definitely still a noob. i appreciate the performance gentoo has given some older machines, and the install instructions have taught me a lot of what is going on. very impressed with this distribution ...
thanks for any help anyone can provide ...
