Since I've installed gentoo, Firebird, and all Mozilla apps for that matter, load far more slowly than they should. 8s at least for Firebird, and worse for mozilla and thunderbird, even with prelinking. It's been driving me crazy, since they all load much much faster in windows - and this is Gentoo! Then, I found if I enable APIC support for uniprocessors in kernel, everything loads like it should (under 2s), but it breaks my wireless lan making firebird useless. I read on the forums APIC and nforce2 boards don't get along (just my luck). I'm running on an athlon-xp 2500 oc to 2.35 ghz, 512m pc3200 ddr, 8m cache 7200 rpm hd, and nf7-s mobo. I'm running gaming-sources 2.4.20-r7.
my CFLAGS are:
CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -Os -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe"
I've also tried using -O3
What am I doing wrong? _________________ Nothing is Cheesier than Cheese |

I'm on the verge of getting X working. I've got the same CPU as you, but at 2.33ghz (these mofo's sure do overclock well ) and an AN7, which is also nForce2. I'll get back to you about how fast it loads, but i hope i don't have a similar problem. |

This is interesting; adding symmetric multiprocessing support in the kernel has the same effect as APIC; it makes everything load right, yet breaks my wireless lan. This makes absolutely no sense because, at least as I understand it, multiprocessing is for Hyper-threading processors. How this makes everything load fast yet break my wireless lan is beyond me..
I think gentoo just hates me... none of this makes any sense.... please help. _________________ Nothing is Cheesier than Cheese |

Enabling symmetric multiprocessing support automatically enable apic since it relies on it. And you should try the latest love-sources as it contains patches that solves the problems regarding apic and nforce2. |
