PostPosted: Sun Feb 01, 2004 7:08 am    Post subject: XFree86 problems... Reply with quote

When i try to startx i get the following message:
Quote:
(EE) VGA(0):Virtual hight (0) is too small for the hardware (min 1)
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Ive looked though the /etc/X11/XF86Config and am unable to see what it is talking about. Ive run /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config a few times now and i am sure i have the setting set correctly for my hardware.

Any Help would be apprecated.

It would help if you could post your /var/log/XFree86.0.log as well as your /etc/X11/XF86Config files so we could help you debug. I just finished working with an XFree problem myself...

Id do that but that would mean manually typing all that out as i am posting this on a different computer... anyway i have decided that Xfree86 and my monitor a NEC MultiSyc LCD1545V don't like eachother. I could put a old 15inch CRT i have laying around on but only as a last resort.

I've never heard of this particular error, but you might want to try commenting out all the ViewPort lines, and see if that helps.

I say that they don't like eachother because i only get that message when i set the default depth to 16. But when i set it too 8 Xfree86 works but my monitor won't desplay it. I get a new set of error messages when i set the default depth to 24.

Kamagurka, does your error say
Code:
(EE) VGA(0):Virtual hight (0) is too small for the hardware (min 1)
exactally? From what I see here, it looks like you are using a VGA driver, and if you have an nvidia card, you should be using the nvidia driver (emerge nvidia-kernel) and in your xf86config, changing your driver to nvidia. This might at least start to fix the problem.

yea, i figured that too.
it just confuzzled me that i have an ATI card that i couldnt find in the card database of xf86config...however the chip is a nVidia Geforce 2 MX, so ill just get the geforcedriver. ill post of my endeavours when i get to my nuxbox and tried that.
