|
|
last week my celeron 500 laptop decided to practice suicide, so i took the 2.5" hdd out of that, and yesterday i bought an external usb2.0 hdd cage so i can go around with 20gb in my pocket. now, let me introduce my problems with this hdd cage.
i have a usb2.0 compliant mobo, the kernel has evertything he needs but.... this drive is incredibly slow (i'm tranferring rite now at 1.2M per second).
how can i check that my hdd is actually using the 2.0 protocol???? this drive was not brutally fast on my laptop, but, not even so slow.....
this is my fstab record:
Code: | /dev/sdc1 /mnt/wally vfat users,rw,noauto,sync 1 1 |
cheers, m |

what usb drivers did you compile into your kernel? _________________ Kororaa install method - have Gentoo up and running quickly and easily, fully automated with an installer! |

Code: |
<*> EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support
<*> UHCI HCD (most Intel and VIA) support
<*> USB Mass Storage support
|

I may also be wise to check if the USB 2.0 device you're buying supports the high speed features of USB 2.0. The thing is, a lot of companies that produce USB gadgets claim "lightning fast transfers with USB 2.0!" but that doesn't really mean anything. A USB 2.0 device is not any faster than a USB 1.2 device unless it specifically adheres to the "high speed USB 2.0" standard.
That's the trick right there - they are claiming "lightning speed" but not "high speed USB" so they can fool anyone.

Right - and don't forget: "Full" Speed is USB 1.1 and "High" Speed is USB 2.0 |

this is the box:

[/url]
and, i'll tell you something more. Actually it happens that somethimes (while writing big files) the drive gets stuck, the led on the box is green [green = on, orange = on && (R || W) ].
i can't even ear any sound! and gkrellm tells me there is no R/W activity goning on....
in windows 2000, on a usb v1 machine, it works great! fast and smooth! file transfers are really constant, on my gentoo they got peaks... |

my compact flash card worked with this:
Code: |
/dev/sdc1 /mnt/wally vfat users,rw,noauto,sync 1 1
|
and since i was mounting the camera under wally, i left it unchanged!

you might need uid=1000 in your fstab options too.. _________________ Kororaa install method - have Gentoo up and running quickly and easily, fully automated with an installer! |
