i have 3 computers and untill now was behind a crappy windows machine as my gateway, now the gateway was intially setup with a ntl usb cable modem using usb not a nic, ive since rethought the whole setup and installed a base gentoo system onto a pentium 120.
the problem first starts when i tried to get the gateway onto the net using dhcp, i think the cable modem ntl gave me has registered its mac address on ntls dhcp server does anyone know of a way to reset that mac address or fake that im still using that mac adress.
I bought new network cards and a switch etc and now want to setup my gateway using a nic instead of the usb crap.

ps yes ive got the resolve.conf and everything else working its just getting the broadband off the usb and onto a nic thats not working it just sits and waits for ages then fails, ive tried reinstalling the broadband under windows using a nic so that it registers that mac addy but to no avail

sorry if theres a post allready about this

any help greatly appriciated

The answer is to ring ntl's support (yes, i can hear you groan already), because they need to register each device, be it usb host or nic, that you connect your modem to.

Once you've gotten them to register the nic mac address of your choice, everything should work fine.

I've had this same problem with Blueyonder.

Hope this helps somewhat.

I'm not sure if this is the case anymore...

I've got a Gentoo router on a cable modem and have changed NICS in it around 3 times, and had no trouble as such...

Had to powercycle the modem though...

Having said that, I built a router for a firnd to do exactly the same thing, and it had the same problem. I narrowed it down to the firewall coming up before the it requested an IP. So i turned it off, requested an IP via dhcpcd and bobs your uncle it worked. Firewalled it up again, and had no problems since... Got an IP every time it was rebooted...

i used a knoppix CD to register the MAC addy via the web interface then installed IPCop Linux on it for a router :-) yes i'm in the UK using NTL (if you can switch to "Plusnet" do it. NTL are the crappest ISP i have ever had, AOL were better.

thank u for helping me resolve this problem guys : splitscreen was right the only way i could get it to work was to phone ntl and ask them to reset the mac address, after that it worked instantly only thing i was left to do was route my internal network via iptables then bing bang bong its not all gone wrong job sorted :)

further more as to what viperlin said about ntl yes i totally agree, but if u tell them u hate their crappy service and have been considering dumping them for bt then ntl will reduce your price(u gotta winge a few times 1st) i got em down to £17 for the 600k instead of £25 they really do suck but at that price who am i to complain, its not like i live in sweden and can get 2mbit for like £15 so im so so happy for now :)

thank u again guys :)
