after grub I get this

Uncompressing linux... OK, booting the kernel

************(ecetera

BIOS-Provide physical RAM map:
BIOS-e820 00000000 - 000000000

*********(ecetera)

Warning only 896MB will be used.
use a HIGHMEM enabled kernel.
896MB LOWMEM available
found SMP MP-table at 000ff780
hm, page 000ff000 reserved twice,

then it stalls, and nothing happens. I enabled HighMem support in my kernel using the liveCD but I still get the same message. I have no idea what to do! a little help would be greatly appreciated

please provide more info!

- what hardware?
- what kernel?
- etc...

do you get that error while booting with the livecd or while booting with your custom made kernel?

cheers

okay... did you realy enabled himem in your kernel?
and can you please check what cpu you enabled in your kernel? and what gcc version are you using?

could you try to compile your kernel for p3 and try to boot with that? (i know... but you could give it an try...)

or try to compile it for i386 and try it with that.

are there any other special things you compiled for your kernel?

cheers

well the same things happened when I compiled the kernel with p3 and i386

I am positive himem is enabled

I cant think of anythign special I enabled, The problem started when I enabled MTD support int he graphics section of my kernel, (for multiple monitors) but then i disabled it.

and how do i check what gcc verison I have?

oh and problem occurs when i boot from hard disk not liveCD

gcc version:
Code:
gcc -v

for the boot: try to boot without any fancy stuff (aka fb console and that kind of things).

btw: does the live cd boot without any problem? if you can boot it with the live cd, then the chance is big, that you missconfigured your kernel. anyway... what kernel are you using?

cheers

is this your first self made kernel?
if so, try using once genkernel to compile an kernel with it. or use genkernel to build an generic .config file for your system and start customizing it till you have what you need.

another solution could be to use the .config file from the livecd.

cheers

Is all of tat ram in a single stick? If not, have you tried to take one out to boot? This wuld tell us if it really is a problem with the high-memory kernel option or something else.
