|
|
I ran emerge -k kde...it took about 40 minutes or so, but it installed and i rebooted...i call 'startkde' at the prompt and get a mess of junk:
xset: "unable to open display ''"
startkde: starting up...
kreadconfig: error while loading shared libraries: libart_lgpl_2.so.2: cannot open shared object file: no such file or dir" t
his goes on with ksplash, kdeinit...(same missing libart file)
then startkde: could not start kdeinit. check your install.
Error: can't open display:
warning: connect failed: no such file or dir
ksmserver: error while loading shared libs: libart_lgpl_2.so.2
startkde: shutting down
warning: connect failed: no such file or dir
error: can't contact kdeinit
startkde: running shutdown scripts
kde-config: error while loading shared libs
startkde: done
So that's what it's doing...I was under the impression portage/emerge was perfect for a newb because it requires minimal fuss with install and if a package needs something, it will just download it...any help would be great, thanks. |

You can't start KDE direct like this because it needs X Windows to be running. You should use 'startx'. Try this and if KDE is not the default window manager (it starts Gnome or something else) you can change the default in /etc/rc.conf. At the bottom of the file you will see a line for XSESSION, mine reads:
XSESSION="gnome"
...as I use Gnome, yours should probably read:
XSESSION="kde-3.1.5"
...not sure about the versions. |

startkde: running kpersonalizer....
iceauth: creating new authority file /home/glow/,ICEauthority

Nope, you also need to "emerge fam"
There was a build problem with the KDE on the livecd, but after emerging these two packages it will work fine.
Don't start kde by using "startkde". Edit the /etc/rc.conf file, like the note above says, put in your kde version, then run "startx" instead. |

make sure XSESSION = "kde-3.1.4" or "kde-3.1.5" or whatever version you happen to have emerged. |

emerge fam responds with
calculating dependencies
emerge: there are no masked or unmaksed ebuilds to satisfy 'fam' |

sorry, the name has changed since the CD was made. Off of the cd it should be called "fam-oss" (it's in app-admin). |

I just did a fresh install, using the 2003-9-11 gentoo 1.4 livecd. then I did an emerge sync; emerge -u world. I have kde 3.2.1 installed. I wanted to emerge kdesdk, but I get this message:
Code: |
# emerge -pv kdesdk
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies |
emerge: there are no masked or unmasked ebuilds to astisfy "app-admin/fam-oss".
!!! Error calculating dependencies. Please correct.
|
on another machine I nfs-mounted the /usr/portage directory from this problem machine and was able to emerge kdesdk. (the good machine was just installed from the 2004.0 cd)
how do I get it to forget about fam-oss and just use fam instead?
