at the install i did "emerge -k nvidia-kernel"
then while you set up X you have to pick "nv" driver
i understand the "nv" thing since it's common in other distros but what does the former do.
also i though that gentoo comes w/ nvidia proprietary drivers ... which of course have 3d acceleration... where are they and how do i use them |

the emerge nvidia-kernel command compiles a kernel module against your current kernel source tree located at /usr/src/linux. To use this module you have to do a "modprobe nvidia". Then, in your XF86Config file change the driver to nvidia instead of nv. This will then use the nvidia driver and you should have 3d acceleration. You should also add nvidia to your modules.autoload file and anytime you change major kernel versions you will need to rerun emerge nvidia
Code: |
emerge nvidia-kernel
emerge nvidia-glx
opengl-update nvidia

I heard someone say that 24-bit colour does not work in X.
He said 24-bit colour just defaults to 16-bit colour any way. |

Oops! Never seen one this one... One doesn't have to load it (as a module) too? _________________ Don't bother! |

No. It will work anyway, but you will have to use the proprietary nvidia driver to be able to start x with that in your config. I can't find the glx module, but OpenGL-stuff works fine anyway. |
