Hola

I just rebooted my system to be greeted with a lovely xdm login dialog. As you can imagine I wasn't a happy bunny, what with the kdm background matching my desktop n' all. ;)

I'm not sure what has caused the error. All I've done today is play around with sound. I've emerged arts, emerged gcc, removed arts completely (useless) and settled with good old nothing. What do I actually need something like arts for anyway? In fact, my guitar tuner will not work with arts running, I can't record anything with Audacity when arts is running (meaning I have to shut it down anyway) and now with it gone, sound seems to work fine. I have replaced kaboodle and noatun with Alsaplayer (the Jack sound server sounds interesting) and everything still seems to work. I'll probably find out sooner or later if something is no longer working with arts gone.

Anyhow, removing arts is the only thing that I can relate to this KDM problem, seeing as it's related with KDE. Whilst booting I see this:
Quote:
which: no kdm in (/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:.. ...)

It carries on like that for a little bit. Is there any way I can get it back? Better yet, does anyone have any idea why it decided to up and leave on me?

Thanks :)

Interesting ... emerged kde-3.2.0 last night with:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -v kde

... and logged out of kde. When I tried to log back in with my normal (non-root) user, it looped me back to kdm. I decieded to restart, and when I did, I got kdm, but my custom setting were gone and I was still having the looping issue when trying to log into my user. I could log in to root fine though.

I mention this, because I wonder if they could be related? Did you just upgrade to 3.2.0?

No, I haven't upgraded to 3.2

I upgraded to 3.1.5 about a week ago, with no problems I might add. But this issue only came to play about an hour or so ago. Unmerging arts is the only thing I can connect it with.

Did either of you two get the same error I saw whilst booting up?

I didn't see that, but I wasn't really looking for it.

Thankfully I'm not the only one then. Hopefully someone will have a clue what causes this... looks like we'll just have to wait. :)

Add another with the same error ... Which: no kdm in (........

I just upgraded to 3.2 from 3.1.5. During the process of upgrading I had to emerge -C arts and reemerged arts.

I'm going to try and reemerge arts and see if that helps.

have the same problem. I've tried to set the PATH by myself but nothing happened. when I edit the /etc/profile the new settings for PATH are only available after login...
I've edited the /etc/profile.env and set the ROOTPATH to /usr/kde/3.2/bin and it worked, but after an emerge /etc/profile.env was changed and the path was gone.
I'm not happy with editing the file over and over again....
any solutions?

just emerged arts again and now it works!
I've checked the /etc/profile.env and there where same changes:
Code:
# THIS FILE IS AUTOMATICALLY GENERATED BY env-update.
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE. CHANGES TO STARTUP PROFILES
# GO INTO /etc/profile NOT /etc/profile.env

export LESS='-R'
export PAGER='/usr/bin/less'
export QMAKESPEC='linux-g++'
export INFODIR='/usr/share/info:/usr/X11R6/info'
export CVS_RSH='ssh'
export XINITRC='/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc'
export CXX='g++'
export CC='gcc'
export GDK_USE_XFT='1'
export ROOTPATH='/usr/local/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.3:/opt/Acrobat5:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/qt/3/bin:/usr/kde/3.2/sbin:/usr/kde/3.2/bin'
export QTDIR='/usr/qt/3'
export G_BROKEN_FILENAMES='1'
export CONFIG_PROTECT='/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/3.2/share/config /usr/share/config'
export KDEDIRS='/usr'
export HOSTNAME='gentoo'
export LESSOPEN='|lesspipe.sh %s'
export INFOPATH='/usr/share/info:/usr/share/gcc-data/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3/info'
export PATH='/usr/local/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.3:/opt/Acrobat5:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/qt/3/bin:/usr/kde/3.2/bin:/usr/games/bin'
export MANPATH='/usr/share/man:/usr/local/share/man:/usr/share/gcc-data/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3/man:/usr/X11R6/man:/usr/qt/3/doc/man'
export GLIBC_SSP_CHECKED='1'
export KDEDIR='/usr/kde/3.2'

All PATHS now contain /usr/kde/3.2/bin and KDEDIR is new, the old KDEDIRS seems to be wrong... maybe it can be deleted...

So I think when I unmerge arts again and change the settings manually it will work...?
