Hi,
I tried out the 2.6 kernel (gentoo dev sources 2.6.1) and it seems to me that everything is a lot slower on my system, emerging sessions being the most noticeable. I'm just wondering if anyone else has observed this apparent slowness.
Perhaps, I'm missing some crucial configuration options, does anyone have any suggestions? Also, should I be using the gentoo-dev sources or some other source in portage? |

I use mm-sources and it seems much faster than 2.4. However, make sure you are turning off everything in the "kernel hacking" section of the kernel config unless you have a specific need for it and that should speed things up.
Also, does lots of stuff show up in your system log that seems to be repeat messages? you could have usb-debugging or iee1394/scsi/ide/etc-debugging turned on that would slow down some things. _________________ http://ckdake.com/ |

I use the kernel from kernel.org for whatever reason, I just prefer the official kernel without Gentoo's patches, speeds up things a little without them. Try to enable as little as possible but have everything you need. Compile the stuff that you don't use as much as modules, such as ALSA should be compiled as modules, this all makes the kernel smaller and thus a faster kernel. I've tried genkernel just for fun once, the kernel took forever to boot compared to the kernel I did, just a word of advice I've compiled 2.4 and 2.6 with the same things, and 2.6 goes faster. (I have done benchmarks) |

Ok, I'll try out these suggestions and see what I get. I believe what people say about the 2.6 kernel which led to believe I was doing something wrong. |
