I just installed the gentoo 2.6.1 kernel on a fresh machine using the live cd. The live cd succesfully used the nic to get all the emerge files. After booting though, the system can't see the nic, giving the error "eth0: unknown interface", and "/dev/eth0" doesn't exist. I've recompiled the kernel twice triying to get it to work. At first I thought I was missing the correct driver, but I compiled it into the kernel. I can't really do anything until the nic works. Please help!

I did the exact same thing, but I forgot to compile the natsemi drivers (that *IS* what you are using, right?).

Did you compile natsemi as modules or into the kernel? If you compiled them as modules, did you remember to have them start up on their own?
(It's pretty frustrating to know what you are trying to say, but not have the correct terminology. RRRR! (You know what I mean, the equivalent of insmod)

Also, try using "net-setup eth0" and see if that helps. It worked for me on a 3c905c-tx NIC. Wouldn't see it any other way, but would get it up fine if I used net-setup.
