!!! Error: the virtual/imapd package conflicts with another

I am in the process of updating packages on my system, and have run into a problem:

I run postfix for smtp with courier-imap as the pop3/imap server. I do *not* have the "courier" package installed, as it conflicts with postfix for the MTA. When installing mod_php or php, I get the error that the virtual/imapd conflicts with a package, and I get the following:

$ emerge php --pretend

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] net-mail/courier-imap ("virtual/imapd" from pkg net-mail/courier-0.44.0)
[ebuild N ] net-mail/courier-0.44.0
[ebuild U ] dev-php/php-4.3.4-r4 [4.3.2-r2]

It seems that php is requiring me to install courier and courier-imap, but I don't understand why. I should already be meeting any and all mail server requirements, as I am running a working smtp and imap server without fail, and I've re-emerged both postfix and courier. Is there any way to tell the system that to let me install php? Thanks

Ran into this same problem recently. You can edit /var/cache/edb/virtuals to get around this. I think the courier-imap ebuild isn't adding itself in correctly.

Perfect, that worked great!

I added virtual/imapd to be net-mail/courier-imap

I also had to switch the order of virtual/mta, since it insisted upon installing courier, but once postfix was first in the list, it stopped trying.
