I'm happily using X/Gnome on my Toshiba 5105-S701 today, but I need to find the config file which allows me to add additional modes that XFree86 -config didn't pick up when generating XFree86.conf

The maximum resolution mode is currently 1400x1050. where Can I find these entries? Thanks.

XF86Config in your home directory, or /etc/X11/

Most likely want to use the one /etc/X11 so as to make the changes global for both your root and user account.

Usually if you have the correct HorizSync and VertRefresh rates in the Monitor section and your card can support that resolution it will be available as a choice in whatever config utility that you use.

If you want to look at mine it may help. I use the ati-drivers and used fglrxconfig to generate this one, though I have tweaked it some.

The Toshiba 5105-S701 has a 1600x1200 LCD screen with an Nvidia Geforce 4Go chip. Whatever that was that I used to generate /etc/XFree86.conf, it didn't do much in the way of generating any modelines. That's where my confusion came from, I was used to finding them there in Redhat.

Will use the posted example and XFree86.conf.example and tweak my config.

Any suggestions on the rate settings for an LCD of this type? I don't think that the physical device pays any attention to them, but it would probably be best for the machine to know the real numbers.

Thanks.

I found a pretty good source of information. I just have to check to see what the differences between this sample and current Xfree86 4.3 conventions are.
