i'm installing xfree on a pentium 166, 64mb ram, hercules stingray 64/video box. x starts up, but the screen is blank. for the driver, i put "ark" (because it has the ark processor). after starting, i cannot do anything but restart (buttonwise). btw, i'm installing it on debian, actually, but this is the best place to ask :)

thanks in advance

You mean X is running (i.e. does not pop you back to the console), but your WM does not start?
Do you get eny errors on the console or in the X log?

Try starting X with "X &" and open a "xterm -display :0", then switch to the X screen and try to start your WM there. It should be easier to catch errors from the WM there.

Stupid Question(TM): You _are_ starting some kind of WM are you?

What makes you think that? ;)

xinirtc has a "twm &" line in it ... which does call a wm doesn't it? :)
btw, i checked, and /usr/X11R6/bin is not in my PATH var ... also, "export PATH=$PATH:/usr/X11R6/bin" changes the variable only 'till i reboot ... isn't it supposed to save that permanently? if not, forgive my n00bishness :)
