Whenever I play a sound, such as an MP3, it sounds like it's coming through a tin can. I'm running 2.4.22-r5, and my sound card is an old, 4-channel SoundBlaster Live. I left Sound Support and OSS Support turned on in the kernel config, but disabled the kernel's EMU10k1 driver, just like "emerge emu10k1" said to do. After doing "emerge emu10k1" and then "modprobe emu10k1", lsmod shows that the emu10k1 module is loaded.
I know that the problem isn't the soundcard, my headphones, or the sounds I'm playing, since under Windows everything sounds great.
I'm using headphones instead of speakers, if that matters.
I've tried playing sounds with both Noatun and Mplayer, and it's always the same result: it sounds like the sound is coming out of a tin can, or a carboard tube. I didn't have this problem before I switched to Gentoo (used to use RedHat )
Does anyone have any ideas as to what's causing this problem, and what I can do about it? |

I wasn't aware that ALSA was available for 2.4 kernels. If it is, I'll give it a shot. |

It's available, it's just not built into the kernel. The Gentoo ALSA install guide gives an excellent step-by-step overview of setting it up under 2.4 kernels. |
