Hi all,

I am new in Gentoo, and yesterday night I wanted to install OpenOffice. After nearly 4 hours of hard compilation, I had to stop it (it was very late, or very earlier this morning, i needed few hours sleep without the noise of the pc :D ).
Is this normal to take that long, or did I miss something to make it quicker. My box is PIV 2.66, 512 Mb ram, 120 G HD. I can't post my make.conf cos i'm at work, but it is a pretty normal one (gnome gtk2 -kde -qt opengl alsa -esd etc ...).

Thanks in advance
Julien

Openoffice is a big bugger, so it is normal to take that long.. Not as long as Gnome, or KDE, but still quite long.

It really is a pig of a compile, the slowest I would of thought after KDE, but you could always try to get the binary version so you don't have to compile it yourself (although you may lose out on some performance).

Code:
emerge -k openoffice

I'd rather loose some time and have something "made" for me. I was just wondering if I did not miss something during the installation, and apparently not. So I will launch the compile in the morning

So, if I compile it with the option make a binary, i can burn this binary and if I need to reinstall it, i can just use the binaires made for me. Right?

Thanks for your help guys
Julien

Right. If you use the same processor in your machine. :)

Yea, if you make the binary, you can use that later when you want to reinstall. Just do:
Code:
emerge -b package
The package will be created in /usr/portage/packages/All by default.

Emerging open office caused many problems on my box.
It is long, and needs a huge diskspace. I had 2,5 Go free disk space, and it wasn't enough!! I had to free 1Go more!

On my newly installed box I use openoffice-bin. It's slower than a compiled version but anyhow, openoffice is damn slow, so the little decrease in speed due to emerging binaries is hardly noticeable...
And it's not worth the pain imho.

You could try the ximian version which is in portage too. Don't know what it's worth, but I've heard good things about it.
