recommended kernel for gateway/firewall

I am setting up a P233-MMX as a gateway/firewall for my home LAN, and was wondering if anyone could recommend a kernel for this purpose. Obviously, stability and security are of the highest concern.

Any recommendations?

I would use one of the >= 2.4 kernel-series because of the netfilter code (iptables) witch is more secure and much more powerful than the former ipchains.
