I'm installing Gentoo on my sisters PC as she has a laptop with Windows and could do with a Linux box, especially for server type functions like SMTP etc.
When I booted with the LiveCD, the monitor drove me nuts saying that it wanted 1024x768 at 60 Hz or whatever.
I believe her graphics card is a SIS650.
Thankfully I managed to get SSHD going on her PC and I am controlling everything using SSH.
How do I ensure, that on the first boot, that I don't run into the same problem? Will I run into the same problem when I reboot into the live system for the first time? |

As long as you use a display manager like KDM or something and make sure you have your XF86Config or whatever that is set correctly you should be fine. _________________ I think that the forums are the greatest thing about Gentoo, thanks to everyone that posts on them!

Yeah........thanks...........but that normally happens at the end of the boot sequence.......any problems during the boot sequence and I will be up the creek without a paddle.
One thing for sure......I'll definatly have this running an sshd server all the time! |

The problem you're having seems odd. However, if the X server's starting up at boot time, then you may want to check out the XF86Config file. If that's not the case, then try something such as configuring LILO(if that's the bootloader you are using) to boot the kernel with vga 792. Of course, this is only if using a framebuffer. If you're not booting X or using a Framebuffer, then I'm not too sure why the problem's occuring. However, you may want to try using a framebuffer and see if that helps. |

Thanks all.....
I will try framebuffer for her particular network card....what I am worried about, is that it would use a refresh rate, by default that the monitor can't handle. |
