Is there any way to get the volume buttons on my laptop working? I read a thread about who had gentoo working on what laptops, and some guy (who had an hp ze4430us -- same as me) said "everything works," so I'm assuming its possible. Can anyone help me with this?

You can use xev to see if they generate keycodes when pressed. If they do, then it's just a matter of mapping the keycodes to events via .Xmodmap. If you dig around a bit for xev and .Xmodmap, you should get some good information.

It's also a little bit easier if you use something like GNOME or KDE, where they provide a graphical interface to set these keys (for instance, in GNOME, go to Desktop Preferences -> Multimedia Keys).
