Hello,
While I'm waiting for kde 3.2 to emerge... I was just wondering if I can run emerge in another process at the same time. Is that safe, or could it mess something up?
Thanks,

Well, here's the deal. After you've run emerge kde, portage has calculated all dependancies needed to install kde.
If you decide to start another emerge, it also makes it's calculation. If your 2nd process emerge requires a dependancy that kde also requires, it will emerge that as well.
EX:
emerge kde requires package XX
emerge blah requires package XX as well
Let's say you start KDE first. Then you start emerge blah. Both emerges will install package XX because when you ran the emerge command, it made package dependancy calculations. Note, this is not a bad thing for it will simply recompile the package. However, you'll want to avoid the same package being compiled simutaneously.
That's the only bump I have noticed. Other than that, running 2 emerges is something I always do. However, I always do an emerge -p package to see what's going to be installed..... |
