Ok, this is a really wierd problem, mainly because I can't find any logs explaining it :\.

So wine locked up my computer today, and upon rebooting... gdm comes up fine. So I attempt to login using gnome, and it just shows the gnome splashscreen and just kind of stops. I mean I can still move my mouse, but nothing is loading up.

I thought perhaps it was a gnome error, so I tried logging into kde from the gdm, and it did the exact same thing, only it got to "Loading System-Services" or whatever the second icon is in the kde splash before it just kind of stopped.

Fluxbox and Xsession seem to work fine, but I cannot get either of the other two to function, even after a re-emerge of gnome (i'm not about to sit through kde).

I would love any insight anyone might have into this situation.
thanks,

just an update:

kde will load, if i give them about 10 minutes to do so... I dunno if this helps anyone, perhaps this has happened to someone else before? Gnome still just sits there.

whats your /etc/hosts file look like.
If your own host is not defined properly things can slooow down.

If that doesnt help, back up your local gnome/kde directories and rename the original and restart gnome/kde see if that fixes it

nope, /etc/hosts only has:
127.0.0.1 localhost

On another note: some applications such as mozilla-firebird and gedit take forever to come up. Well, mozilla comes up fast, but takes forever if you wish to type something into it.

Guh, I feel like I'm trying to uncover some kind of mystery.
