startx as root, and gnome 2.4 hangs at nautilus

I know I know, using X as root isn't a good thing, but sometimes I'm just too lazy to jump to my normal user, startx and thne pull some docs online.
Problem is that root used to be able to get into X in gnome 2.4, and now it hangs at nautilus. Anyone know what may be the problem?

Why are you logging in as root anyway? If you need to run a command as root, open up a terminal.

Otherwise try cleaning out ~/.nautilus as root.
