Alright, gentoo boots up fine. I log on an type:

startx

and get:

At this point, my brain is fried, I did 'emerge xfree' and I still get this error.

well, it says

so that generally means that you didn't make a config file for X. check out http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/desktop.xml#doc_chap2 for instructions on setting up X.
