I will momentarily complete my 10,000th work unit! It has been precisely 379 days (one year, two weeks) since I joined SETI@home, and I have contributed 10.667 years of CPU time to the Gentoo SETI team.
Awesome! 8O

How many workstations have you working on seti? It's not only your old dual P3. Or have you tuned it a bit

(btw, what is the best gui add-in for seti? I tried looking for the answer in this thread, but since this thread now spans 19 pages, i might have missed the answer.)

Ok its back:

My setistats thingy

Between me not being able to get java to ftp it over anymore, and my sys-admin killing our ftp server for a week or so ( he blames it on vi/solaris ), it is working again. So I emerged php mod_php and redid the ENTIRE thing in php this time, and php ftp's the file over no problem after an hour or so. So the stats aren't quite right today but tomorrow it will be back to normally, sorry about all that.

I think there was some mention of one of the gui's causing problems, but I don't recall which. I myself don't use any of them, so can't be of much help.

If you're using GNOME, then take a look at gdesklets and use the Seti Sensor.

It's very eye candy. --> My Desktop

:( I don't use either. I am using Fluxbox. :D Any suggestions that would work with a *box windowmanager? It doesn't have to be a screensaver type program or anything.

Currently, I can think of:
  • 2x Athlon MP 2400+
  • 2x Athlon MP 2200+
  • Pentium 4 2.0 GHz
  • Athlon XP 1600+
  • 1.0 GHz Pentium 3 (the remainder of the original dual P3 ;-))
  • 2x 733 MHz Pentium 3
  • 2x 550 MHz Pentium 3 Xeon
  • 2-4 Pentium II-class machines

I have fun. :-D

I see you are gaining on me. With your 50 units to my 45 for the last 24 hours, I guess I better get a few more machines up and running. Currently I am running on:
1- Dual MP1600+
1-XP2800+ (Barton Core)
1-XP 1800
1- Athlon 1200
1- Athlon 850
1- Netserver LH Pro (Dual PPro 200)
1- Proliant 5500 (Currently with only dual PII-400's, the other 2 are coming from an Ebay auction)
1- C640 Laptop (M P4)
1- P4 2.0 ( my wifes pc)
I have about half that many waiting to get Gentoo loaded. One of these days when I find some time, I will put some pics up of my entire setup. Don't know about you, but my electric bill is high :)

Did I mention that my wife is the only M$ user in the house? maybe with everyone's help, we can covince her to go Gentoo. Drop her a line at nanapatty74(@hotmail.com)

Just tossing in a few more work units :D

Haven't been crunching too long, only 1200 or so units but gaining at around 60 a week. Now if I could just afford the parts for the rack I want to build. (Well I can dream can't I?)

50 units a day?! So happy this isn't a race.

Think of the positive side. We'll have a chance to be among the top teams if we can get everyone to convert.

Hooray I've just joined! :D I feel a bit guilty about transferring my 3000-odd units from my previous group but that's been as good as dead for 6 months and I'd prefer they go to a good cause!

I wasn't in any group, so I figured I'd join, though the majority of my machines are not running Gentoo. The plan is for them to all be running Gentoo, eventually, though.

Anyhoo, just to brag a little bit. I jumped into the group right at 11th place with 7919 units (at the time). My units popped us up one notch on the Top 200 Clubs group list. It's too bad we're all going to be put back to zero soon. Most of the reason that I'm so high is that I've been in since nearly the ground floor of Seti@Home.

Oh well.

I'm joing GLUE as soon I get this problem solved:

When I run Seti on my P4 3GHz HT with 1 gig RAM, one workunit takes between 1h 50 min and 2h 20 min.

When I switch to Gentoo on the same machine, it takes about 3-3.5 hours for one to complete. I've test running both the latest stable 2.4.20 and now I'm running the latest mm-sources.

Likewise running on my SunBlade 100; with Solaris it takes about 9-15 hours, Gentoo over 20!!

Any ideas, or is it just the way it is?

You know by default setiathome runs @ 19 on the nice scale under Linux.
Try changing to something closer to 0, I bet it runs faster. Or if you are adventurous -19 8)
Also, all work units are not created equal, some just take longer. Try using the same work unit in your testing, the difference might not be that bad.

It's already running at -nice 0, didn't care much for -19 though :)

I'll try chrunching the same unit, but it's kinda a long shot: last friday Gentoo ran 24 hours with me not working on it, then it managed 21 WU's (including my other 3 machines).

Yesterday windows did the same thing, completing 25 WU's.

But since it runs even faster on Windows when using a ramdisk, maybe I should try that on Gentoo too? I'm beginning to wonder if it just might be the Gentoo disk that stinks.

If you've been getting this error for no reason (or error 41), then take the advice given on http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/, and remove the user_info.sah and result.sah files from /opt/setiahome. Note that you'll have to run the program manually at once in order to log in again.
