There is a definite gamplay increase in 2k4 over 2k3 in linux!
I am extremely pleased with the performance of the native ut2004demo under gentoo. why would you even consider emulating win32 under wine? save that for counter-strike!
If you are really having performance inssues try turning the display settings down... not all video cards are created equal

No ping times in the internet game browser here either, I have to sort alphabetically and connect to a server that I know is local.
And for some reason it runs like dog shit, very jumpy. There doesn't seem to be much of a difference between 1024x768 with moderate-high settings, and turning everything down and off and 640x480. This is the same sort of thing that happens to me in Battlefield on Windows.
Specs are as follows:
1.2GHz Athlon Thunderbird
256MB PC133 SDRAM
Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 80GB HDD (almost full)
GeForce 4 MX 440 with 64MB DDR RAM, AGP 4x
Motherboard bug that causes the NVIDIA driver to use AGP 1x
Is the GF4MX440 to poor a card, or would the AGP 1x have anything to do with it? Other OpenGL games work great like Quake III and Enemy Territory.
Or is the hard drive or RAM a problem, as there seems to be a lot of HDD activity when loading the game. |

Does anybody know how I can fix my problem? How do I not use Mesa? Do I need to rebuild X or my kernel with some other option, or what? Thanks. |

I'm also having problems connecting to internet-games. No pings in server browser and I'm unable to connect to the games. Everything else works though... |

First run the following: nvidia-installer --sanity. Take note of any errors it has, most likely you will have errors with your symbolic links. Something in the most recent emerge -u world decided to switch my OpenGL libraries from using the Nvidia to using Mesa. I would still get the Nvidia Logo when X started. Games would even run, but with weird textures and VERY slowly. The command glxinfo would even report I was running Nvidia's OpenGL Library, and I was. Or I though I was! Till I ran the nvidia-installer --sanity. The next delima was fixing those symlink problems. So to help, this is what you should do *IF* you do get symbolic link errors running the --sanity check.
Run the following command: ls -al /usr/lib/libGL*. It should match the one below, save the file named libGL.so.1.5335 (with the 5336 being the driver version of the Nvidia Linux Driver).
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 653 Feb 10 23:20 libGL.la
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Feb 10 23:20 libGL.so -> libGL.so.1

Btw, the game runs very smoth on my XP3200 1024MB ram with a old gf2pro 64MB. |
This is either a problem with ut2004 or the same problem that has plauged me since Tribes 2. If someone can enlighten me on this it would end a 3 year long battle. From what I've been told (by the guy who maintains the patches for Tribes 2, and from the QA for him), it has something to do with the way the master server looks up your hostname. Not your machines' local hostname, but the one that is presented to the internet. Dial-up and all works well in Tribes 2. Put it on the DSL directly OR behind a router and I loose all my netword meters and statistics. I sure hope someone can help me out here PLEASE
Lastly I seem to be getting around 70-75 FPS on my system. P4 2.4G 533Mhz / 512M PC2700 333 DDR / GeforceFX 5900SE (PNY).

Anybody tried benchmarking it yet? You can use the same scipts as ut2003 slightly modified and it sort of works. Some more info and scripts here
Just modify them so they point to the right location and change the slashes to the correct way
These are my results:

I've got the same problem. The intro nvidia thing it is worse then thoes pictures. In the menu where I choose player model it is little like that and the models don't have any heads. Then the text is almost unreadable after some fixing, before fixing the text in the popup things was unreadable. Unreadble... It was like a filter at the test was set. No sharp edges at all at the text. The text was like a line of dots.
I have a Radeon 9000 and uses 2.6.2 kernels radeon thing.
PS: TuxRacer works perfect so hmm...
I tested to follow this guide ( http://odin.prohosting.com/wedge01/gentoo-radeon-faq.html ) and loaded the module fglrx but Xfree wouldent start. "EE - No device found" or something. I did load the module, yes. I tested with my old XF86Config and changed "radeon" to "fglrx" but the same problem. Now I recompiled the kernel, disabled loading of fglrx and running kernels radeon-thing.
Kernel-driver thing: One thing... I loaded the game one time and tested to start a local host. Maby I did forget to stop xmms (Only one audio-channel thing) so UT2004 did lock it self when the loading I think was done. Keyboard and mouse was dead. Rebooted and started again without xmms. Started a server and it started to load then the sound if birds came out of the speakers but then the same as before, dead keyboard and mouse BUT now with birdsongs in the nature.
---
The install file for Windows version of UT2004-demo is named with beta in it. The Linux version must be a beta to then, I think. Maby a new version of the demo is comming with less bugs? *I hope* Enoying to jump over to Windows just to play a game that exists to "Linux". |

I'm using a Radeon 9600XT on 2.6.3_rc2-love2 with FGLRX drivers, and I'm getting the same "random polygon" problem that duff is getting. |

So anybody got a clue where to find those drivers? I've googled without luck.

The only way to fix the ping problem that I know of is to use the windows version with wine (for those it works for). Hopefully they'll release a bug fix demo for it. |

How do I install the linux version,
I've seen.
Code: |
# chmod +x ut2004-lnx-demo-3120.run
# ./ut2004-lnx-demo-3120.run
# ut2004demo
|
does that start a installer or the actual demo (I'm still downloading it).
I'd like it not to be installed in my /home/user dir |

yeah just move the downloaded file where ever I moved it to a /home/usr/temp then unzip it wont install there mine tended to default want to install in /usr/local/games/ut2004demo
I ran:
Code: |
# chmod u+x ut2004-lnx-demo-3120.run
|
then:
Code: |
# ./ut2004-lnx-demo-3120.run
|
(which verified it then unpacked it and fired up the install screen
, which after you select the install path it will automatically fire up the game.)
then the command to run the game there after is:
also if you have a problem with low fps which I had a brutal 5fps after initial install..... for radeon I had to rebuild my driver
after which I got jsut over 50fps
Onslaught is fun enjoy |

now because I don't play games, I'm totally crap at it, suggestions on how to improve? | Play against the bots (choose instant action) for a while, they're pretty easy and it lets you figure everything out. Capture the flag is an easy game to start off with.
Adjust your mouse sensitivity carefully so you can spin around easily enough. Adjust your keyboard controls so they work for you, I use forward=e, back=d, strafe right=f and strafe left=s although some people will say that's inefficient and you should just use a row of letters so you never have to move your fingers although that's hard to get used to. Figure out some strategies that work for you, I often use the chain gun and run tight circles around people until they're dead which is pretty quick with the chain gun :) Make sure your frame rate is fairly high and it doesn't get choppy when you're fighting, if so try turning down some detail and/or reducing the resolution. Keep tweaking your keyboard config until you're happy with it, the defaults certainly don't work for me.
I'm sure there's tons of strategy guides out there for first person shooters but a good mouse/keyboard config, a high frame rate and a smooth net connection are an important foundation to start off with.
Learn what all the stuff is you pickup and what it does, a good player ends up knowing the entire map really well along with where everything is located so they know where to go to get what they need. |

You could try updating the firmware on your router or asking this question on the atari forums and see if someone there has some insight:
