Can anyone recommend a good video card for Gentoo, kernel 2.6.2 that you know will work (supported driver)
I've been looking in the meantime too.
Probably 3D PCI, something that can handle Quake.

I've used a Radeon 9700 Pro for a little over a year now, and it has been one of the better big money purchases I've ever made. I know Linux users tend to flock towards nVidia, but I wouldn't slight ATI. I had my card running with 2.6.0 quite happily before I had to revert back to a 2.4 kernel for non-related issues. Very nice card.
In all, I don't think you can really lose with either nVidia or ATI. These days, companies are more willing to pay attention to the Linux crowd, because I think we're starting to make a dent in the desktop market. Five years ago, you would have to scour the earth to find a first-rate game that was native to Linux. Now we have quite a few options.
My only strong advice is to get absolutely as much video card as you can possibly afford. If you're going to play anything 3D, your experience will be so much more rewarding than if you go from budget card to budget card every few years. I expect my Radeon to suit me for quite some time to come! Good luck! |
