Hi,

Ever wanted to use vi/less/emacs key bindings in Mozilla Firebird/Firefox... Now you can.. grab the install file from the cvs repository of mozless.mozdev.org. The link is http://www.mozdev.org/source/browse/~checkout~/mozless/downloads/mozless-0.1.2.xpi?rev=1.1&content-type=text/plain
click Save As.. otherwise you're will get jibberish on the screen. after that you have to tell firebird/firefox to open the xpi file that you just downloaded. it will install the extension. and you're ready to go.

Also dont forget to check the main page for the list of key bindings.

I think you can turn on emacs keybindings in all gtk2 programs, though I don't know how.

How about re-binding keys in emacs? Say C-, instead of C-x?

well i did some research and couldnt believe that such a program existed without people knowing about it:
http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/more-info/keyconfig

this allows changing the keyboard shortcuts in firefox.
didnt test it yet so i hope it works.

Really? If anyone knows how, speak up. That would be awesome.

edit/create ~/.gtkrc.mine put this in it
Code:
gtk-key-theme-name="Emacs"

[edit] changed ~/.gtkrc-2.0 to ~/.gtkrc.mine

only problem is that this file gets overwritten every time you change your theme. fortunately, that doesn't happen too often.

Did that, and hitting ctrl-a still does select-all, instead of going to the beginning of a line. Is there something wrong?

Put that line in ~/.gtkrc.mine and it should work now and won't get overwritten. I think gnome uses different rc files (I am not using gnome) but all the gtk rc files should import this file so that's where your personal settings would go. Also make sure that you close the application and re-open it for the changes to take affect. So make sure you close all firefox windows and then reopen firefox after you make the changes to see if it works. Also, firefox would have to have gtk2 support enabled for this to work (GTK2 has to be in you use flags when you emerge firefox). The keybindings only work in text boxes. So in the address bar or anywhere else where you can type text C-a will go to the front of a line. On a regular web page C-a will still select all.

Strange. I was testing it in gedit, assuming that the default text editor would use the proper key bindings. But apparently that is not true, since it works in firefox and in bluefish. I guess gedit is just busted. Can anyone else confirm this?

As far as I can tell, mozless does not work in recent (1.0.4) versions of firefox.
And I don't see any way of deleting it either!!!

If that was a serious question you might want to have a look at www.emacswiki.org. However I would strongly recommend not changing too many keybindings. If you use emacs seriously remembering the keys is hard enough without mapping them to your custom settings in your head.

It seems to do the trick for firefox, but not for thunderbird. Is there a smiley for 1/2 of a smile?
