Hi,
How do I keep Gentoo from patching Nethack for graphical support? I like the text-based one just fine - plus that way I can play it inside screen and if need to ctrl-alt-backspace there's no problem.
I found I can change it by editing make.conf before each time I build nethack to take out the graphics flags, but it's annoying to have to remember to do that.
Thanks!

Ok thanks. There's no way to set those flags to automagically be used every time you emerge nethack, then? |

I also just emerged nethack the other night and was suprised to find the qt interface and no text interface. If USE="qt gnome X" and all that is set then I feel that it should install both the graphical and the text interfaces, then run them by nethack-qt or nethack-console or whatever.
I may get around to submitting a bug requesting this... or am I alone in wanting to have both installed?

I'd be very interested in it as well. The problem with graphical interfaces is that they tend to make it very hard to tell certain monsters apart, and sometimes that can be deadly. |

I hear so much about Nethack and was wondering why its so fun and if its worth the time to emerge it? _________________ http://etacarinae.blogdrive.com |

Heck yeah it's fun - it's one of the best games around, been under continuous open-source development for something like twenty years. Has to have THE most varied gameplay anywhere.
Check out the official site for more info. Have fun! |

Yes, I agree. Nethack is fun.. but it's kinda hard to learn.. particularly the textbased version... But once you have mastered it, I guarantee.. you get addicted to it

Oh, and take a look at my comments on bugzilla (linked above in this thread), there's a fairly obvious workaround. |

Nethack is most definetly one of the greatest games of all time. There are some other gems in the games-rogulike section too. Tome, Zangband and Adom are my personal favorites. |

So I emerged nethack (the graphical version) and it was extremely small and didn't have any appeal in my eyes whatsoever... so on to my question...
In your opinion, is the text version better than the graphical version? _________________ Ninja's are wicked kool.

That looks different than the one I emerged... looks more like a text version. _________________ Ninja's are wicked kool. |

yeah... that link you posted is the text version .... ASCII graphics.
I prefer the text version of Nethack. But I have been playing it for a long time ... before it was even called NetHack. Back in the early 90s when i discovered it, the game was simply called Hack. Though there was a period of lenthy time when I did not play it and actually thought that the game had died. Recently I discovered it under its new name Nethack. This newer version added alot more to the game but its roots are still the same.
I think the game goes back as early as the early 80s. At that time it was called rogue. As I said, I prefer the ASCII graphics way better. The gui verion of the game looks aweful in my opinion. Though for new players, it might be easier to pick up. |
