When I run "man emerge" as a user, (but not as root) I get this error:
Code:

bzip2: Compressed file ends unexpectedly;
        perhaps it is corrupted?  *Possible* reason follows.
bzip2: Success
        Input file = /var/cache/man/cat1/emerge.1.bz2, output file = (stdout)

It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted.
You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files.

You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover
data from undamaged sections of corrupted files.

This happened to me a long time ago under mandrake, but I can't remember what the problem was, and how or if I resolved it.

It looks like your emerge man page has been corrupted. Does this happen with any man page? Or just the one for emerge? I would suggest testing other man pages out first, to see if the problem exists. You also might want to try info, like this:
Code:
$ info emerge

See if that generates an error too. You just gotta narrow it down: either man is broken, or the particular man page is corrupt.

Incidentally, I just tried "man emerge" and got the same problem. Running "info emerge" worked fine. I then tried "man emerge" as root, and got no problem. After that, "man emerge" works fine as a regular user...

i had this error, too, and solved it by adding my user to the group "man".

thanks for the prompt response guys! Info worked fine, as well as any other man page I could think of. Man emerge worked fine as root too, just not as a user. I thought that maybe since I had run "man emerge" as root, that it would clear up some cache problem, so I could get it as a user again, and that didn't work.

finally the problem went away. No Idea why, I ran the command several times as both root and user, but this time the problem just went away. too strange... man.
