Can I run a command to shut the laptop's screen off?

I am currently building from stage2 on this old compaq laptop, which will take a while with the 200mhz cpu.

I am concerned about the screen, though. I don' t know if this is beause it's an old laptop or not, but the screen does not shut off when I close the notebook. It does go into sleep mode, however the screen wont shut off (I can see it glowing when it is closed).

Can I shut the screen off with a command from the liveCD? (I am ssh'ed to the laptop so i can run commands on it and monitor the installation while it is building).

The unit already feels a little warm. Should I be concerned about the screen staying on all night?

This is a compaq armada 1571DM.
