Does anyone know when I can use lilo om my AMD64 system?
I tried grub-static but this resulted in a messed up partition table, so I had
to start all over.
I now use Knoppix to install lilo on my MBR and make a new kernel bootable.
Hopefully I can do it the normal way soon...

couldn't you build a static 32-bit lilo?

I'll let you know later tonight when my Athlon64 system is built. I'm shutting down in about 5 minutes to go do that :)

I would just use grub-static its much more flexible and failsafe.

Here's a second reccomendation for using grub-static, it's what I use. I like it... it understands just enough about partitions that it doesn't have to cache sector numbers to load your kernel. Whereas with lilo, if you forget to run lilo after you overwrite your kernel binary, you're /screwed/.

I got grub-static to work on my system, previously I had been using lilo but now I think I've been converted. Would be nice to have a full 64-bit version of grub, but the static version has been working nicely for the last month or so.

Screwed?? Comeon!! Ofcource you're not screwed.
Boot with a bootable Linux cd, like the lifecd's or Knoppix. Chroot to your Gentoo installation and run lilo. Problem solved, you can boot your kernel. 8)

But what about people running older machines that don't have a CD ROM? If, at that point, you've forgotten to create a bootdisk or just plain don't have any floppies (this happens to me all the time...I just use my iPod for school work 8) ) then you really are kinda screwed. But all the same, I'm still more comfortable with lilo since I've been setting that up since RH 5.2....

Shoot I have an amd64 box without a cdrom... Once they boot off the HD they are good to go.

lilo will NOT work, only if you also have a 32bit installation to install it from. as lilo is 32bit assembly, it will NOT run on a 64bit OS, the same with grub, its 32bit assembly, therefore they have a grub-static package, which is a binary package of grub (and built on a p4 system) :)

Well...you just contradicted yourself. Basically what you are saying is that if someone would create a "lilo-static" using an x86 it would be okay.

Actually, Knoppix will NOT work -- it's a 32-bit distro, and you can't chroot to a 64-bit environment with a 32-bit kernel. You'll have to use the Gentoo AMD64 livecd...

jdong: ummmmmmm....if your just doing it to install grub it'll work just fine as grub on the AMD64 is a statically linked 32-bit binary...hence grub-static....and as far as LILO is concerned, this is a moot point since it doesn't work.

I can ensure you that this will work fine. This is how I build my bootloader
while Lilo still isn't AMD64 compitible. Everytime when I have build a new
new kernel, I boot with knoppix and do my thing. After this I can boot my pc
and use lilo to boot a kernel or windows.

I've used lilo until I set up Gentoo on my Athlon 64 system. There's no way I'll ever go back to lilo. I've just used grub for another system which mixes IDE and SCSI disks. I vividly remember what a pain it was to get this to work with lilo. Any error you make in your grub.conf is easily overcome by editing menu entries in grub before booting. Bye bye lilo! 8)

Well I screwed my system once with grub. So I'll rather stick with lilo.
It's just a personal feeling. I know and understand lilo and I have no
desire to use something else as long as it works.
But if some else won't agree with me and wants to use grub,
be my guest. That's what Open-Source is all about. If you don't
like it, change it just the way you want it :D

Of course you're right, it's all about freedom of choice. I still think you should give grub a second chance. Are you sure it was grub that screwed up your partition table? I wouldn't understand how that could have happened.
