.. I am having issues on my new. system .. Dual 246 k8w tiger. All setting on auto, no oc, 1GB OCZ reg ECC dc 128bit.

I am emerging kde right now with MAKEOPTS="-j1" and it's working fine .. If I use -j3 it seems I get segfaults. Could I be overheating ? I cant get lm-sensors to build so .. I have not way to check the temp but for the bios.

Right now I am using 2.6.3-r2-gentoo .. boot options vga=791, and no numa in the config.

I have run memtest86 on my ram with no errors with ECC on and off.

any suggestions ?

Have you checked the system health display in your bios? It might indicate an overheat situation on one of your processors.

Also check your /proc/cpuinfo file to make sure both of your processors are reporting properly.

If both of these are normal, you might have a bad processor. :(

things seem better today ... fingers crossed. I have edited make.conf back to -j3 and things are continuing to emerge.

I am almost convinced that it was a heat issue. I am using very cheap tt2tr heat sinks.. and I went light on the hs grease. Maybe it heated up and gelled to better coverage. Dono .. but .. I am happy ..

On btw .. if its the cpu... I have 2 other pairs to check with.

More likely the memory ... these Opteron boards seem very picky ...

Also I've the laptop version opterons, and they run the coolest of any chip I've ever seen (even when overclocked)

well .. I got lm-sensors working .. and my CPU's max at about 48C... that is CPU 0 its got the memory HTT so it seems to run a bit hotter then CPU 1. So its not heat.

Programs run stable But I have gotten a few more segfaults on on some pkgs builds. How many passes should I let memtest86 run ?..

I'd first try each dram on its own, and see if stability gets better, then put them both in and see if the seg faults come back. Mine worked fine on their own, but when mixed they gave me errors ....

You should be able to isolate it, then run some mem tests .....

My drams had to be from the exact same configuration of internal ic's, from the same country .. they were that picky.

Did you enabled acpi in the kernel and are you running acpid?
Usually this solve most problems related to overheating (especially segfaults ones).

According to the docs, ACPI is unstable at best on dual opteron systems. :!: You should make sure that it is NOT compiled into your kernel, and that acpid is not running.

ok ... I have acpi=off as boot opts and things are stable. I am really just playing about right now. I scarfed this HD and CDROM from my server just to test. I am wating on to 2xSATA drives and a DVD burner for my finial config.

--Edit --still got segfaults---
but ... I saw some errata with ECC scrubbing and bank interleave on the Thunder K8W so .. I stopped ECC altogether and now is working great. I am doing a emerge -e world just to check .. at -j3 (almost done now) no segfaults. JOY :)
