I want to be able to type in Russian and Japanese with my keyboard; however I'm a little hesisitant to try something without advice since I'd be horrible if I got stuck with my keyboard in another language! How do I do this properly? _________________ ProtonMail - Free encrypted e-mail from Switzerland

I do not think there is much to be afraid of.
In KDE or GNOME, use keyboard switcher utilities they provide and try to do some typing. If anything goes wrong, go back to keyboard layout that worked so far, it is just a matter of a mouse click.
In non-X environment, use "loadkyes <keymap>", where keymap is defined in /usr/share/keymaps. Iif thing do not work properly, "loadkeys -d" should return you back to your default keyboard settings. If things work porperly, change KEYMAP entry in /etc/rc.conf.
Do not forget that you also need to setup the font properly to see non-latin characters, in text console it can be done with setfont.
Hope this helps. |

Right-click the panel, Add to panel -> Utility -> Keyboard layout switcher. |

Nice! Thanks! Uh oh.. Russian works, but Japanese doesn't. When I switch to Japanese, it's like I'm still on US.. now what? So close! One language down, one more to go..
A little bit of testing and I discover certain keys are re-mapped with Japanese. I still see US letters but the symbols like { } [ ] and such are different so it's partly working.. I would expect to see hiragana symbols but I don't.. help? _________________ ProtonMail - Free encrypted e-mail from Switzerland
