Hi!
Upgraded gcc, xfree and kde the other day and afterwards sound won't work. It is not arts-related because sound won't even work in console or WindowMaker.
Symptoms:
When I open an mp3 file with xmms the file will simply not play. Same happens with zinf, mplayer, the lot! Tried reemerging alsa-driver, xmms and alsa-xmms with no results. But when I try aplay I get an error:
Code: | $ aplay /usr/kde/3.2/share/sounds/KDE_Click.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/kde/3.2/share/sounds/KDE_Click.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 22050 Hz, Stereo
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:523:(snd_pcm_hw_drain) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_DRAIN failed: Input/output error

What is wrong here?
I use kernel 2.4.22-gentoo-r5, and my lsmod is
Code: |

My soundcard is an onboard VIA VT8233/A/8235 AC97 Audio Controller.

Do you have already tried to set the volume with alsamixer (in pkg media-sound/alsa-utils)?
Depending on your alsa version 4 controls named VIA DXS may show up (scroll to the right in alsamixer) which have to be set to 100%. And of course Master and PCM should not be zero.
Are your alsa-libs and alsa-drives the same version? Perhaps they are not compatible.
You could also try a more recent version of alsa. I have 1.0.1 installed and it works, but then I also have kernel 2.6.2. _________________ Join the adopt an unanswered post initiative today! |

The DXS controls were set to 0%. Setting them to 100% fixed the problem. Thanks for the help!
