|
|
Hi,
Ive just done a fresh install with the Gentoo Dev Sources 2.6.2, KDE 3.2 and am using alsa with an audigy sound card and have noticed that the sound is extremly choppy if I am doing anything other than just listening to music. i.e. if I have an mp3 playing and I open a program or even just minimise and maximise a window the sound skips.
I have adjusted the settings in KDE control panel and none seem to make a difference, any one have any ideas what it can be?
Specs of PC - AthlonXP 2700+ 512MB DDR Ram, MSI Mobo, MSI Geforce FX5600 Ultra, Creative Audigy soundcard
Thanks

I have discovered that this only happens if I use Kaboodle or noatun, if I play the music in Xmms it plays fine, weird!
Surely someone else has had thois problem too? |

I have this very same issue, except my sound is distorted only when playing video. I would like to blame aRts for it, but mplayer works fine even when using aRts for audio output.
I use the mm-sources 2.6.3-r2, AthlonXP 2000+ with an Audigy card. |

do i understand that right? that playing video, even with mplayer, distorts your sound? or?
first of all i'm not using 2.6 kernel.
but i have a similar problem with mplayer!
tell me: what is your cpu utilization playing videos with mplayer with and without the nosound option!
would help me very much!
thanks,

riggagoogoo,
Maybe I'm totally wrong but...
Did you compile your new kernel with DMA enabled? Do you use the correct chipset for your motherboard? I had the same problem here caused by my incorrect choice of the chipset (choppy sound while doing others tasks).
You can check this post :

Good Luck! |

Thanks I will check out that other post, I have now moved to kernel 2.6.3 mm source and still have the problem but notice that it only happens if I use kaboodle or noatun, xmms plays fine - could be an arts issue...

Yep... I had these problems too.
Fixed by digging deeper into the Kernel config and enabled DMA (not where you would expect to find to either) and made sure I had the correct chipset enabled for my IDE. Then in KDE make sure you set arts to use alsa and not autodetect which is the default, fixed everything...
The only problem I have now is my mouse is very slow (long hand move for mouse move) with 2.6.3-mm2
Regards
Tim
