cry for help...processes went sky high and comptuer froze

ok all you linux gurus...my computer froze...but I haven't a clue as to why. THere was enough activity left on gkrellm that it was showing a moving graph of processes that were climbing really really fast! What could be the posibility of this?

I've had heat problems in the past from running intensive things like long compiles etc.
