|
|
If I recall correctly, my FDD hasn't been working since I installed Gentoo, but I haven't bothered with it since I've never really needed it. However, I need to make a bootable floppy, and the only computer I have available with a floppy unit is my Gentoo box. What happens when I try to mount the floppy ("mount /mnt/floppy") is absolutely nothing. The relevant line in "/etc/fstab" is:
Code: |
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,user 0 0
|
As I said, nothing happens. I figured it might be a kernel problem, so I checked for floppy support under "Device Drivers->ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support". I marked "Include IDE/ATAPI FLOPPY support" with a * (it was indeed missing), exited, "make && make modules_install", copied the relevant files to /boot/ just to be safe, and rebooted. However, that didn't seem to help. I'm not sure what I'm missing. It's not responding at all. I guess it could be the hardware, though I haven't had time to open the box to see if any cables are loose (going to check that when I have the time).
Any help is appreciated.

Alas, no - you do not have an IDE floppy.
You need Device Drivers -> Block Devices -> Normal floppy support. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

Also, for me mount /dev/floppy does NOT work. However, mount /dev/fd0 does, so you might want to try that. |

Ok, it appears that I had support for it. I checked the BIOS, and it appears that the drive itself has either broke down, or that the cable got unplugged when I installed a PCI card. Maybe someone else will find the information in this thread useful... |
