|
|
Hello,
I am looking for the right window manager to use (enough configuration option, and not too heavy and stable enough).
Kde 3.2 looks nice and provides the amount of control I wish; I can afford the RAM for it (2 I have a 2Gigs RAM) but I notice that lauching new windows takes a very significant amount of time. Even for a simple terminal. I generally use gnome-terminal but I also noticed the same kind of 10seconds startup time for other applications like the kde console, ggv... I can see in top that the most active process is X but does not require more than 10% cpu...
I noticed that emacs starts fast and the same for mozilla (so why should I wait for a simple terminal ?).
Did you experience the same kind of problem ?
I am using xfree-4.3.0-r4 on an AlBook 15" 1.25Ghz (but I still believe that my question is more relevant in the desktop forum than in the PPC forum)
Regards,

I had a similar problem which was remedied by making sure that the hostname for localhost in /etc/hosts was the same as the one in /etc/hostname.
Also, I had the same problem after having recompiled X with USE="ipv6" without actually having support for ipv6 in my kernel. Hope this helps. |

Indeed I did not add the name of localhost next to localhost in the /etc/hosts file.
I have just done it and the windows open quickly now.
I do not really understand the link between the hosts problem and the slow starts but it is fixed now anyway.
So a big Thanks to you !
