I can't load any soundfont to my SB Live!
Code:

$ sfxload 8mbgmsfx.sf2
/dev/sequencer: No such device or address

Yes both /dev/sequencer and /dev/sound/sequencer exist.

I am using kernel 2.6.2-gentoo-r1
alsa-lib-1.0.2
alsa-utils-1.0.2

Sequencer support is enabled:
Code:

$ gzcat /proc/config.gz |grep SEQUENCER
CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER=y
CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS=y

Don't know why /dev/sequencer doesn't work.
But I found a new utility to load soundfonts!

Download awesfx 0.5.0a from http://www.alsa-project.org/~iwai/awedrv.html#Utils
There's a new utility called asfxload.
Quote:

asfxload loads a soundfont onto ALSA's Emux wavetable. The old version sfxload works only with ALSA's OSS emulation. See the SoundfontHandling page for details of how to use soundfonts.

yep, awesfx is what you need to load soundfonts :). it's actually in portage...

try this:
Code:
emerge awesfx

of course, you'll also need some sound fonts to load... try getting the default Creative Labs soundfonts from:

http://www.sf2midi.com

you have to register for an account to log in and be able to download, but it's free, and they haven't spammed me yet ;).

if you get the soundfonts 8mbgmsfx.sf2 and 2mbgmgs.sf2 and put them in /usr/share/sfbank, and then add this:
Code:
sfxload emu8m.bnk

to your /etc/conf.d/local.start, the nice Creative Labs general MIDI soundfonts will be loaded on boot-up. they make my awesome Final Fantasy VII midis sound *truly* awesome :).
